Maryland JUCO Announces All Conference Basketball Teams and Awards

BALTIMORE -- The Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference (Maryland JUCO) today announced its 2016-17 All Maryland JUCO Men's and Women's Basketball teams and other award recipients. A total of 44 student athletes and coaches representing 13 member institutions earned honors. 

Men's Basketball
Baltimore City Community College, Harford Community College and the Community College of Baltimore County Catonsville (CCBC Catonsville) lead the way with three student athletes, followed by Prince George's Community College and College of Southern Maryland with two. The rest of the men's team is represented by Allegany College of Maryland, Anne Arundel Community College, CCBC Dundalk, Chesapeake College, Garrett College, Hagerstown Community College, Howard Community College and Montgomery College.

 Patrick Smith (Montgomery) was selected Maryland JUCO Conference Men's Basketball Student-Athlete of the Year after garnering the highest point total, as voted on by conference head coaches. Smith is currently averaging 17.5 points per game, which is sixth best in conference. He is ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the conference with 13.2 rebounds per game and 1.8 blocks per game, respectively, and has made 53.4% of his field goal attempts.

 The Maryland JUCO Conference Men's Coach of the Year is Mike Smelkinson (Harford). Smelkinson guided the Fighting Owls to a 12-2 conference record and regular season Maryland JUCO title, after finishing 9-5 and in fifth place in conference last season. This award is given annually to the head coach of the regular season conference champion. 

The Maryland JUCO Men's Basketball Coaches Association selected Greate White (CCBC Catonsville) as its 2016-17 coach of the year. White is in his second season at the helm for the Cardinals. After going 4-10 in conference last season, he led his team to an 11-3 record and No. 2 seed in this year's Maryland JUCO Conference Tournament. This award is voted on annually by the conference men's head coaches.

Women's Basketball
Harford leads the women's side with four student athletes selected to one of the three teams. Chesapeake, Garrett and Montgomery each have three. Baltimore, Cecil and Prince George's have two and CCBC Catonsville has one. 

Daisa Harris (Harford) is the Maryland JUCO Conference Women's Basketball Student-Athlete of the Year. Harris averages 22.1 points per game, which is second in the conference. She has hit 50.5% of her field goal attempts and is ranked second with 5.9 assists per game. Her 2.3 assists to turnover ratio is third best in Maryland JUCO.

The conference and coaches association coach of the year goes to Mike Seney (Harford). Seney lead his team through the regular season and posted a perfect 13-0 record in conference play. In those games, the Fighting Owls scored 107 points per game and had a 61-point average margin of victory. Under his leadership, the Fighting Owls have won 45 consecutive regular season conference contests.
