Montgomery College- Rockville Men’s Soccer Team wins MD JUCO Championship

The Montgomery College-Rockville men’s soccer team was crowned Maryland Junior College Conference (MD JUCO) regular season champions after defeating Cecil Community College. The team finished the season with an overall 13-3-1 record and ranked 11th in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). Seven of the current players will be returning next year including leading scorer Mamadou Diatta, which finished the season with 19 points.

 

Steven Nakamura of Montgomery College-Rockville Named Coach of the Year

 

Steven Nakamura, head coach of the Montgomery College-Rockville campus men’s soccer team was named the 2006 Coach of the Year by the Maryland Junior College Conference (MD JUCO). Mr. Nakamura has served as head coach for two years and was previously the assistant coach for nine years. Before accepting the coaching position with Montgomery College, Mr. Nakamura served eight years as the head coach for Holy Cross High School in Maryland.

 

The experienced soccer coach led his team to victory, defeating Cecil Community College and capturing the JUCO regular season title. They finished the season with an overall record of 13-3-1. When asked what led to the victory, Nakamura said that speed played a tremendous factor. “This year’s team was the fastest team I’ve seen in my 11 years, says Mr. Nakamura. “ The athletes were dedicated, played well, and we had consistent defense and a consistent goal keeper.”

 

The team also ranked 11th nationally with the National Junior College Association. The team’s leading scorer Edmond Cofie finished the season with 20 points and Mamadou Diatta, the second leading scorer, finished with 19. Sophomore players Edmond Cofie, Yael-Phyllis Amyame Medou, Yan Konan, and Aldo Ventura, will be competing in this year’s All Star game.

 

Seven of the players will be returning next year and the outlook of next year season seems promising. “Every year is different but we should do well, if not better” said Nakamura.
